A Multifaceted Personality

A renowned midfielder, a promising coach, all you can find in Shanta Kumar, a former Indian International.

The 45- year old hails from Bangalore. He also played for Top Clubs like Mohun Bagan and Dempo SC. He switched towards coaching after ending his playing career.

Shanta Kumar`s love for football comes from his father (Late Mr. M Arjunan), a former national football player who played as defender in Binny Mills Club. However, during his father`s time, Binny mills was battling with constant strikes resulting in uncertainity of employment which forced him to look out for other opportunities and finally got in TTK (T. T. Krishnamachari) as an employee.

It was through great hardship that Mr. Arjunan brought his family feeding 5 children as the single bread winner. Shanta Kumar recalls the days as teenager who had no jersey or football kit to wear or enough money to buy any one of them. His Cousin brother, Mr. Ram Mohan, who is also the founder of Southern Blues Team, he calls him as “Angel” for sponsoring him with the all these requirements.

He started his football career in 1981 from Veteran Coaching Camp in Austin Town in Bangalore under the guidance of Mr. Kannian (Ex-Olympian), Mr. S Raman (Ex-Olympian) and Mr. Shiva Prasad (Ex-Army Service man) who were responsible in nurturing his career. In a Span of 17 years (1982 – 1999) as a football player he had experience of playing in all the major tournaments like Santosh Trophy, Federation Cup, Rovers Cup, Nehru Cup etc.

Apparently, he had some bitter memories like of 1996-97 when having been selected for Goa to play in Santosh Trophy was not considered eligible for the simple reason that he was not the local resident of Goa.

Shanta Kumar took charge of Gangtok Himalayan SC as the head coach before the first I-League second Division campaign (2015-16).

Before coming to Gangtok, he previously coached the Karnataka State Football team and Karnataka police team.

Kumar Received his AFC “A” coaching license earlier in 2015 and took up Gangtok Himalayan SC as his first professional coaching assignments.

This was his first visit to Sikkim as a coach. In past, he used to come as a Mohan Bagun player in the 1990s during the Governor`s Gold Football tournament.
